By attending and responding in writing to one of these events, activities and/or exhibits, you can earn extra points. You may earn credit for up to 5 activities, each of which earns a possible 5 points.

What events help me earn extra credit?

1. Taking a paper to the Writing Center for the first time. Make sure you are engaged in the session, or the tutor may make a note of how the session went, which will get back to me, thus earning you no points; please bring me something from your tutor that shows you had a session with him/her.

2. Any academic special lecture or presentation at SUU or other university. I’ll let you know when I hear of one, but I don’t know everything that happens on campus, so keep an eye out for something that would interest you and fulfill the assignment at the same time.

3.  Visiting and writing about the Braithwaite Gallery for any exhibit.  You can only do this once per semester, though.

3. Select exhibitions and plays in the area or elsewhere if you travel related to topics discussed in class.  You may suggest one; however, I must approve it for you to receive extra credit. Here are some options:

Events on Campus:

1. Convocations- various speakers discussing different topics from academic to world or local interests. Convocations Calendar
Next Convocation: Climate of Change: Global Warming and the Struggle for a Science-Wise Nation – Dr. Robert Davies, Physicist and Associate of the Utah Climate Center Sept. 1, Tues, 11:30 am, in the SUU Auditorium

How do you earn these points?
1. Attend the extra credit opportunity.
2. Obtain a program, handout, ticket or other documentation from the event, when available.
3. Write a 250-word double-spaced summary/response to the event. Make connections between what you take from this event and what you are studying in our class this semester. The quality of your writing and the thinking that went into it will influence the amount of points you earn.
4. Staple the documentation (explained in #2) to the summary/response. Make sure your name, course number and section are clearly printed on these documents. Turn these in by the last day of class.
*(The Writing Center visit only counts the first time you go. You do not need to write a paper to go with the visit. Just bring me documentation showing you had a tutoring session.)
5. Extra Credit is due 14 days after you attend an event.

How many points will I get?
1. You will receive up to 5 points for each opportunity you attend and for which you turn in a response by the deadline.
2. If your summary/response is inadequate you may receive no points or less than 5 points.

Why should I go to all this trouble for such few points?
1. Because you will be enriched by engaging with the world of ideas.
2. Because intellectually curious people seek opportunities to learn more.
3. Because you can! Aren’t you lucky to live close to such a variety of fabulous offerings?
4. Because you may be borderline grade-wise and need a few points to boost you over that dividing line.
5. Because you can make it a social outing with family, friends, colleagues and all of you will be better for having done this.

Other ways to earn points (in addition to your five activities):
Perfect attendance = 15 pts.
